What You Need to Know Before Training

This page lays out what we expect from you, what you can expect from us, and what you should bring when you show up to Southern Colorado Crane Academy.

Requirements

Before You Enroll

These are the basic expectations to keep training safe, productive, and respectful for everyone on site.

  • Physical ability: You must be able to climb ladders, access the cab, and move safely around the yard and crane.
  • Weather-ready: Training happens outdoors in typical Colorado conditions. Be prepared for sun, wind, cold, and heat.
  • PPE: Hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, gloves, and work boots are required.
  • Attendance: Show up on time, every day, ready to focus. Chronic lateness or absence will not work in this trade.
  • Attitude: You must be able to take feedback, ask questions, and stay engaged without ego.
During Training

What Your Days Will Look Like

Exact schedules may change, but this is the general flow so you know what you’re signing up for.

Classroom Blocks

Short, focused classroom sessions cover essential topics such as load charts, ground conditions, communication, and safety rules. Classroom concepts are then taken directly to the yard and applied in real working conditions.

All students are required to pass a drug screening prior to participation.

Yard & Rigging Work

Students spend significant time in the yard setting up outriggers, walking the site, evaluating ground conditions, and reviewing rigging setups.

Training is conducted on a five-day schedule of 12-hour days to reflect the pace, expectations, and fatigue operators commonly experience in the field.

Seat Time

A major focus is time in the seat with direct coaching. Training begins with basic movements and crane control, then progresses to more demanding lifts as students demonstrate proper judgment, communication, and situational awareness.

The extended daily schedule is intentional, preparing operators for real-world job-site responsibility.
